Master Mike Heeney, 6th dan Haedong Kumdo, 5th dan Taekwondo
Master Heeney is a secondary school science and maths teacher at a catholic school in ACT. He has been training in the martial arts for 37 years. Master Heeney furthered his training whilst living in South Korea for two years, training Haedong Kumdo under Grandmaster Park Dae-Seop, Master Seo Min-Seok and Master Chung Kyung-Su. Prior to moving to Australia Master Heeney trained Taekwondo under Grandmaster Lee Jung-Nam.
Other arts Master Heeney has trained in include Western Fencing, Capoeira, Aikido, Kobudo and Bongsul. He has trained and taught martial arts both nationally and internationally. Master Heeney has both won and placed highly in many set style and open style martial arts competitions. He has successfully trained numerous gold medal competitors in both Haedong Kumdo and Taekwondo.
Master Heeney believes that the martial arts are first and foremost about developing control of your body in every way. This includes muscle awareness and control, flexibility for ease of movement and fluidity, and mental awareness and self discipline. Training martial arts also has the added benefit of being a great workout for the body as well as developing self defence skills.
